Black of Day is a documentary currently being filmed by Sub_American Productions. We chose to document the dark history of Athens, TX because of the overwhelming amount of urban legends associated within this small area. During our first days of research we quickly found that we were not the only ones interested in the darkness over Athens, TX. There are literally thousands of people from all across the country looking into Athens, TX. There are several online communities, forums, and motivated individuals that have dedicated time, information, and personal websites on the topic of witchcraft, paganism, black masses, and ritualistic activities in Athens, TX.
note: I realize that certain religious people get touchy when others inadvertently associate black masses, Satanism, and other dark ritualistic activities with Wiccan and Pagan religions. However, we all know there is a difference between them. For those of you that don't know the difference, just google it.
The documentary is aimed at educating the public and providing unbiased research to confirm the origin of such urban legends. We are NOT here to fuel the fire of speculation. Athens, TX is 50 miles southeast of Dallas, TX. Athens is known to be the birthplace of the hamburger, as well as the Black-eyed Pea capital of the world. However, in this article I wish to discuss something that is not easily found with a simple google search. I wish to discuss the dark history of Athens, TX and the urban legends that plague the community.
Allow me to give you a bit of information about myself so that you can better understand my position, and reasoning behind this particular topic. Sub_American Productions is currently filming a documentary about the dark history of Athens, TX. Our motives are simple; to educate the public, and provide unbiased research to confirm the origin of such urban legends.
URBAN LEGENDS
First off, lets list the urban legends of Athens, TX and a brief description, along with their significance within our research.
Underground Tunnel Network
An interesting urban legend of Athens, TX is that there is an underground tunnel system directly under the city. The legend is that the tunnels are in the shape of a pentagram and each of the five entrances into the tunnel system are marked by the points of the pentagram, with the courthouse being at the center of the star. However, a more logical approach to the tunnels and their connection with Fuller Park and other suspected entrances are that:
1.) The tunnels were actually part of the "underground railroad" that was used to help liberate the slaves during the American Civil War between 1861-1865.
2.) The tunnels were a means of transporting moonshine during the prohibition of alcohol in the 1920's-1933.
Whatever reasoning behind the original use of the tunnels was, the fact is that the urban legend surrounds the use of the tunnels during the purchase of the Fuller property to the late 70's and early 80's. During this time period the tunnels are rumored to have hosted a variety of ritualistic ceremonies including the sacrifice of small animals and in some cases humans. The local newspaper "The Athens Daily Review" wrote an article in 1989 with written testimony of a personal account regarding the suspected locations of the entrances to the tunnels system. The anonymous person drew a map showcasing the entrances.
Fuller Park
Fuller Family Cemetery is located within Fuller Park, which is located off Gibson road. The two people buried here are enclosed with an iron gate with a large iron fence around them. The only visible graves are that of Medford Lee Fuller (1875-1944) and his wife Virginia McClelland Fuller (? -1938). Fuller park as been shrouded with mystery ever since Mr. Fuller erected the park in 1938 (after the death of Virginia Fuller). Fuller Park is said to house one of the five entrances to the underground network of tunnels that reside under the city of Athens. Rumors regarding Fuller Park are in great abundance. They range between entrances into a tunnel system all the way to the "virgin stone" fence that surrounds the park.
Other areas of interest include:
The Athens Country Club
Beck's Chapel
The Flame Motel (now called Budget Inn)
Elder Dodge Dealership
All the esablishments\areas that I've mentioned above are NO secret... these are the areas that people talk about. The areas above are JUST the beginning!
